May Day began as a Spring festival in which people celebrated the coming of Summer. There are many customs that have been a part of May Day festivities. Some people would put flowers by their doors and windows to keep out troublesome fairies. Putting up a Maypole in the middle of a village is another popular custom. Ribbons attached to the Maypole and are woven together by dancers. Another popular custom is filling May Baskets with flowers and additional treats to bring to friends and loved ones. Kids Kare children honor some of these traditions. They were dancing around a Maypole in their schools and they also visited some rest homes presenting the residents flowers, treats, and fresh young smiles.
